When things like the earthquake in Haiti happen, our first instinct, after thanking our lucky stars that we’re safe and sooo fortunate, is to want to figure out something to do to help. Because we love travel, getting on a plane and physically going to help seems like a good option. That said, Haiti has loads of people on the ground, with far too few resources to go around at the moment. The fact is that the best thing to do to help is to contribute. Organizations like the International Red Cross are often the first into an area, and they have the expertise and infrastructure to do the most good with what they have.
So here is the pitch. This is a bit off the top of my head, but what we’re thinking is two different portrait options. The first option is signing up for a “portrait social” day we’ll have sometime in the spring. There will be food, drinks, and I’m sure lots of kids, and we’ll hold it in a local park here in Boulder. Show up, enjoy yourself, and have your portraits taken. The second option will be our more standard portrait. You and us in a location that works for everybody. Kids, families, maternity…everything goes. Both sessions will come with your edited photos on disk with reprint rights.
We’ll run this for the next three days. The group portrait will be $150 and the standard portrait session will be $300. The best part is that ALL the proceeds will go directly to the International Red Cross. I’ll set up a couple of dates for the group session, and you can schedule the standard session anytime over the next year, so even if you’re busy we can still make this work. The catch is that you have to pay up front so we can get the money to the folks who can really use it.
It seems like the gnarliest things happen to the people who can afford it the least, but this is a good opportunity for us all to contribute something we do have and help out a lot of people who really need it.
Please give us a shout or an email with any questions, and thanks!
