Liberty Skis Photo Shoot

January 29th, 2008 · 2 Comments

So our buddies from Liberty Skis out of Avon, Colorado called a couple weeks back for a super late minute photo shoot of some of the athletes and the new skis. The Snowsport Industry Association (SIA) trade show is in Vegas all this week, and the guys from Liberty needed some new shots to post around their booth and in their catalog.

I had just received our new Nikon D300 and this was a perfect opportunity to take it out and see what it could do. Snowmobiles and gear in tow, I headed with Liberty Skis’ owner Dan Chalfant, Chris Sears and athletes David Lesh and Mike Hornbeck for an afternoon of shooting in the Vail backcountry. The only downside was that the Vail backcountry was, and still is, a veritable deathtrap with all of the avalanche action we are experiencing. With freezing temperatures, variable snow, and being limited to low angle (read: not likely to squash us all in a giant slide) snow, we found a couple spots with interesting lighting and features we could tow the athletes into.

This last one got blown up to 6 Feet x 4 Feet for their booth. I was a little worried as it was hand held in low light, but it actually held up pretty well. Love the D300.

Check out Liberty’s amazing stuff at www.libertyskis.com. These guys are putting out some sick boards and the industry is starting to notice!

Wow! These are some really great shots! Good to see that J.Photo can capture the best shots of athletes in their element…even though it’s cooold!
